The guy infamous for being killed for his hat 2 minutes after meeting him. It's ironic that he's fairly similar in appearance to the Sheriff you meet at Megaton in Fallout 3. Why they made him essential I have no idea, since joining 2 of the main factions instantly puts you at odds with the minutemen's objectives. Preston Garvey is one of the most irritating characters in video game history. The Minutemen are virtuous, annoying, useless babies who constantly need feeding. The railroad were a bunch of cuckolds who think protectrons are people too.
The BOS and Institute were basically the same. The main factions really limited the scope of role-playing compared to what we had in New Vegas.
